Introduction to the system
and contact with the tutor

The tutor contacts the group and greets each course participant 7 days before the first unit begins. He informs them of the consultation hours, distributes general course materials and provides details concerning the first unit.

General course materials include a list of abilities that participants will acquire throughout the course, as well as issues covered in particular course unit. Furthermore, an outline of a standard unit is presented and information on methods of solving the course exercises is provided.

  • Tutor welcomes the students
  • Informs about the
    consultation hours
  • Hands out
    the course materials
  • Reveals the details
    concerning the first unit

Each student learns how the automatic solution assessment system works, and, under the tutor's direct supervision, practices submitting solutions using attached examples.

Modules

Weeks 1 - 4

Reaching the goals by intensive study and individual work under tutelage is based on the materials to be used during the course

For each week of the course (one unit) student receives a set of exercises together with instructions, lecture materials and bibliography (literature, Internet links etc.) The basic aim of each unit is the acquisition of new skills by practical exercise.

Exercises devised according to the ISEL method have been divided into the following categories:

  • sample easy exercises
  • typical exercises based on samples,
  • problems summing up the discussed issues,
  • league exercises for volunteers (the skills can be verified and compared with other participants).

Typical exercises

Throughout the first part of a unit (a couple of days) a student is acquainted with sample exercises that illustrate the issues discussed. During this period the student attempts to solve typical exercise under tutelage, and the system should provide him with all necessary information to help in reaching his or her individual solution.

Contact with tutor during this stage:

  • discussing the sample exercises,
  • tips and help during the resolution of typical exercises,
  • communication on collective forum is advised.

Problems

During the second part of the unit (the remaining days) student is acquainted with the sample problem and the proposition how to solve it, and, if he or she has any questions, will receive the tutor's help. Next, the student is given an exercise to resolve individually; here the possibility to use tutor's help is especially important.

Contact with tutor during this stage:

  • detailed overview of the sample problems,
  • help during the resolution of the remaining problems,
  • during consultations, we advise the students to contact their tutor by instant messenger.

Verification

At the end of each unit, after acquiring the needed skills, the student may test him or herself in a special way - by solving the so called league exercises, which are accessible until the end of the course. Participation in EduGiants League is voluntary and is aimed at combining fun with the benefit of learning.

Contact with the tutor throughout the unit:

  • on the special forum for all the students from the given course group,
  • on-line consultation (skype preferred),
  • contact by e-mail.
